1. Clean Off Salt, Mud, Dirt, and Debris

Salt, mud, dirt, debris, and even snow that lingers on the surfaces of your ATV can speed up the development of rust. Dirt and mud can retain moisture. The longer it spends on your ATV, the more time the moisture has to get to steel or iron components. Do not let salt, mud, or other debris sit and dry on the surfaces of your vehicle. 

2. Store in a Dry Spot

A dry, well-ventilated storage facility is ideal for your ATV. If there is any moisture or water left on surfaces, good ventilation will speed up the drying process. If moisture stays locked in the same space as the ATV, you are more likely to see corrosion. Keep vents and windows open to aid in the evaporation process.

3. Grease Regularly

Keeping the grease fittings pumped with grease is also a good idea after any thorough cleaning or dousing with water. Pumping more grease into these fittings will clear out the water that often builds up in delicate bearings and bushings. The chain also needs routine greasing to protect the metal. 

4. Repair Paint Damage

Scratches and inconsistencies in the paint job of your ATV are the first places that rust will target. Check all over your ATV at least once a year to clear off any rust and refresh the paint job. Choose high-quality paint in the same color. You might also choose to cover the damaged areas with metal primer to prevent any future rust from getting a hold.
