ATV Types
When it comes to ATVs, there are two main categories most models will fall into. Utility ATVs are the most common type and can be identified by their boxy, bulky design. These will often include features like cargo racks and two-up seats (seats designed to accommodate a passenger). They’re often used for work projects, like getting supplies and tools around a property, but they’re also durable and solid enough to spend hours on the trails.
Sport ATVs, meanwhile, are much sleeker and more aerodynamic. They tend to have a boosted suspension system which will keep you comfortable at any speed on any terrain, and they’re purely built for entertainment. If your ATV is just a way to catch a thrill or two, sport ATVs are the way to go.
Size
There are many different sizes of ATV, and all of them have their own advantages. Smaller ATVs will be able to access narrower trails and navigate around obstacles more easily, and the lighter weight means better agility and fuel economy. And for those riders who are a bit shorter than average, a smaller ATV will be easier to control without stretching constantly.
Larger models will often pack more power under the hood and are more stable on uneven terrain thanks to their wider footprint. Taller-than-average riders will also appreciate not having to ball up to keep all controls in reach.
Your Riding Level
You’ll also want to consider your own level of experience when it comes to ATV-riding, specifically. The more experience you are, the better you’ll be able to handle more powerful or specialized models. For those who are new to these vehicles, however, you may want to stick to a smaller engine size (around the 250-300cc range) to avoid riding more machine than you can handle. There’s no shame in needing to learn the ropes before you mount up on the most powerful ATV on the market!
