Your ATV is your pride and joy, and it sure wasn’t cheap! That’s why it’s important to stay current on preventive maintenance. When it comes to repairs on an ATV or any other off-road vehicle, you should always know your limitations. There’s no shame in paying for professional service if you want the job done correctly. In fact, it might even save you the money that you would have had to pay a mechanic to fix your botched repair job. But there are several basic maintenance tasks you can do on your own to prolong the life of your quad, and they don’t require an abundance of mechanical know-how. All you really need is a little bit of common sense and the willingness to learn! To learn more about ATV maintenance, visit Gina's Motorsports of Monee in Monee, Illinois. We serve off-roaders in Chicago and Kankakee County, Illinois.

Check Your Engine Oil

Checking and changing the engine oil on your ATV or UTV is easier than it is on your car or truck because the vehicle sits high and you have easy access to the engine in every direction. Just be sure to review your owner's manual for the recommended oil weight and type for your ATV. Keep a few extra quarts on hand to top off when necessary, and check your oil at least every time you fill up the tank.

Change Your Air Filter

You need clean air for proper combustion, and you need to make sure that your air filter stays clean and dry. Check your intakes and filters after each really dirty ride, and replace your air filter as frequently as necessary. Be sure to also check your air filter before you cold-start your ATV if you only ride intermittently or if you store it over the winter.

Ride Hard, But Not Foolishly

Your ATV is a high-performance vehicle, but it’s not indestructible and neither are you! This means that you should always wear a helmet and protective gear, and be aware of your ATV’s limitations. There’s nothing wrong with riding aggressively, but watch your speed and use the appropriate precautions when you get to a tricky area. Repairs can get expensive, and getting injured on your ATV can really ruin a great outing. If you want to try your hand at a more challenging area, be sure to ride with a buddy!
