Tips for Inspecting a Used Motorcycle
Before you ride your new-to-you motorcycle off the lot it’s important that you give it a good inspection and set up a test drive beforehand. For tips on how to perform a quick but thorough motorcycle inspection, you can read our article below! Then, when you’re ready feel free to stop by our dealership in Monee, Illinois, and grab your motorcycle off our lot today.
Body
One of the first things you’ll want to check when you inspect a used motorcycle is the body. This task is relatively easy, you simply need to keep an eye out for dings, scratches, and rust. Begin by examining the paint, then move down to look at the fenders. Double-check any chrome on the bike for rust and, once you’ve checked that the seat doesn’t have any tears, sit down to make sure it’s comfortable.
Engine
To check the engine you’ll need to schedule a test drive and request to do a cold start on the bike when you arrive. Once this is done and you’re on-site you’ll want to listen carefully as you turn the key in the ignition. Be sure that the motorcycle starts immediately and doesn’t make any suspicious noises as it idles or as you drive. You’ll also want to pay close attention to any smoke coming from your bike’s exhaust or if the clutch or transmission shifts independently as you drive.
Tires
A motorcycle can be a pretty big investment and the last thing you want to do after paying all that money is purchase brand-new wheels. Before you take your used model off the lot, be sure to carefully check the tread of your tires. If they’re beginning to bald, or the tread is worn down unevenly, it’s a sign your motorcycle will need new wheels and an alignment. You’ll also want to keep an ear out for the sound of leaking air. Be sure to check for any punctures or small objects stuck in the rubber of the wheel.
