Every time you ride your motorcycle, you’re exposed to the elements. One type of weather you may encounter is high winds. Although it’s best to avoid riding your bike in extreme wind, there are some things you can do to practice safety when exposed to these conditions. Keep reading for some tips for motorcycle riding in the wind. If you have questions, reach out to Gina’s Motorsports of Monee in Monee, Illinois. We are proud to serve Chicago and Kankakee County.

General Tips

Even in calm weather, you’re going to experience some wind in your face while riding your motorcycle. That’s why it’s important to know how to handle these conditions. We can offer some general tips, but keep in mind that each day brings a different set of challenges related to the weather.

Preparing to Ride

Before you hit the road on a particularly windy day, it’s important to ensure that your bike is ready to go. This means checking that every component of your bike is tightly secured. You should also wear tight-fitting clothes and pack light. If you can, leave behind your backpack and saddlebags. Anything that can catch the wind will create drag. This can lead to your motorcycle swaying more.

Don’t forget to wear a full-face helmet. This will help protect your face from windburn and reduce the effects of wind-related fatigue on the road.

Riding Techniques

Besides getting your motorcycle ready, you can also practice some riding techniques to combat the windy conditions. The biggest tip we can offer is to take breaks. Fighting against the wind can be exhausting and puts stress on your body and mind. Pulling over to recuperate and refuel whenever you feel sore or tired will keep you safe on the road. Regular breaks also give you the opportunity to check the forecast and prepare for the rest of your ride.

When riding your motorcycle, pay attention to your mirrors and reposition them if necessary. A heavy gust could easily shift the position of your mirror and put you at risk of not being able to see behind you.

Large vehicles like trucks and trailers, as well as buildings, can offer you some temporary shelter from the wind. While this can offer some relief, you need to be prepared to ride back into the elements. Maintain focus and don’t get too comfortable.

We hope this guide helps you safely and successfully ride your motorcycle in windy conditions. If you have any questions or you’re in the market for a new bike, call Gina’s Motorsports of Monee.
